Facts and history of the Fox company
2nd world war took Fox company from Alabama, across England, France, Belgium and again through France to Germany. More than 380 men served at this time 51 men were killed in the action and more than 135 wounded. 7 men received decoration for valor, one of which was posthumou award.
Fox company fought in one from most desperate battles taking place in the Europe and participated in the largest parachute operation in the history of the 2nd world war. After the end of the war there would be no singular treatment for its men. Most of them returned home, others were transfered to others units, where they were serving for the rest of their service. In silence and without ceremony as the F company was set up and form was disbanded.
Commander of F company, 1st Lt. Samuel Calhoun was wounded as in the Battle of the Bulge so in the Operation Varsity. But he never asked for transfer to the hospital. He did not leave his men and went with them in the front lines.
The youngest member of Fox company Pfc. Jack Cook had died on the 6. of April 1945, the day before came the order about his transfer back to the USA, thanks to the finding, that he was only 16 years old.
F company during activity in operations of the 2nd world war met and fought for example with members of the 101st Airborne Division, 6th British paratrooper division or with units of Gen. Patton.
As one from the best trained units F company advised to pride American Army, but for example the first fight in vicinity of Monty and Mande-St. Etienne showed, that under bad and chaotic command, abilities and training are useless. In that days died from 2nd battalion over half of the men from the total number of 835 men. Despite the success of the Operation Varsity, nobody doubted, that casualties of all participated units were for the success a too big price. |
